Ultherapy Q & A

What happens to my skin as I age?

One of the main drivers of aging is the loss of collagen and elastin, the two proteins largely responsible for the elasticity and tone in your skin. While this gradual loss is perfectly natural, it accelerates as you get older, especially for women who are passing through menopause (though both men and women lose their skin’s structural support over time).

Now add the wear-and-tear your skin endures over the years, which is mainly due to exposure to the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. This radiation breaks down your skin cells and, without collagen to offer additional support, your skin begins to sag and wrinkle.

How does Ultherapy work?

While laser treatments have taken aesthetics by storm, using light and radiofrequency energies to correct a number of cosmetic concerns, Ultherapy is FDA-cleared to use ultrasound technology to tighten and firm up your skin.

With Ultherapy, micro-focused ultrasound energy is applied below your skin’s surface to cause cellular friction and precise heating at a focal point, without harming the surface area or surrounding tissue. Once your target area heats up, it sets off an immediate contraction and denaturation of your collagen and initiates aggressive collagen synthesis.

This is what’s called a mild healing response. Your body registers the heat and sends in resources to the area to help rebuild and repair it — and this response comes in the form of renewed collagen production.

Where can I use Ultherapy?

Since Ultherapy relies on ultrasound energy, the provider at Qvita Health & Wellness can use it on sensitive areas where your skin has lost tone, such as your:

  • Face, including your eyebrow line
  • Neck
  • Under chin area
  • Chest (decolletage)

In most cases, you only need one Ultherapy treatment, and there’s no downtime afterward, which means you can get right back to your day without skipping a beat.

When will I see results after my Ultherapy procedure?

Since the technology works with your body, you need to allow time for it to respond. You may notice an immediate tightening after your procedure, but the optimal results reveal themselves over the next 6-12 weeks as new collagen tightens your skin. While results may vary, one treatment can last up to two years.
